South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting —June 14, 2011
Mr. Littrell said that the benefit he sees it is
that the city would not have to dig up
sidewalk for each business that wants access
to the Metronet. The access could be
wireless.
Mr. Varner sees that advantage. But if the
Metronet is going to use that to sell
subscriptions to compete with others... that's
where he has an issue. And if this is step one
of a request for "umpteen hundred thousand
dollars" in addition to what the city has
already spent... Unless Metronet is prepared
to start paying some sort of fee to the city.
Mr. Littrell said that Mr. Gilot said the deal is
that, for Metronet to do the radio system in
downtown South Bend first, the city would
cover the cost of this feasibility study.
Ms. Spivey asked if the radio canopy would
offer a hotspot to anyone who has a laptop in
a downtown business.
Mr. Litrell said it is not intended for laptop
users. It's much more capable than you
would need for a laptop computer. It will be
an expensive connection. It will be more
than you would want to pay, or that a
business would give for free to its customers.
It's intended for more high powered
telecommunications than is necessary to
operate devices that we carry around in our
pockets.
Mr. Varner asked if they would then pay a
subscription fee for that Metronet access. Mr.
Littrell responded that, yes, businesses would
pay a monthly fee.
Item 6.C.(3) died for lack of a motion. ITEM 6.C.(3) DIED FOR LACK OF A MOTION.
36
