South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—March 22, 2011
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
D. West Washington-Chapin Development Area
(1) continued...
is directly north of the Center for History.
The structure on the property is known as the
Kaiser family home. It is locally designated
as an historical structure and is also in the
national historic register. Over decades this
house has been cut up into multiple
apartments, is surrounded by pavement for
tenant parking, and is generally in bad shape.
The house was built in 1895 for William L.
Kaiser, a well-known and respected
businessman. The house is smaller in scale
but similar in character to the Oliver mansion
across the street. Upon acquisition of this
property, staff will work with South Bend
Heritage Foundation for an adaptive re-use of
the building. Staff requests that the
Commission authorize it to begin the
preparation of plans, maps and related
acquisition information for this property.
Staff will then present a declaratory
resolution to amend the West Washington-
Chapin Development Area Development
Plan to add the property to the acquisition
list.
Upon a motion by Ms. King, seconded by COMMISSION AUTHORIZED STAFF TO BEGIN THE
Mr. Varner and unanimously carried, the PROCESS TO ADD 803 W.WASHINGTON THE
Commission authorized staff to begin the WEST WASHINGTON-CHAPIN LIST OF
process to add 803 W. Washington the West PROPERTIES TO BE ACQUIRED
Washington-Chapin List of Properties to be
Acquired.
E.
