FY 2008 WEED AND SEED COMMUNITIES APPLICATION `' "~~`,
<br />This committee is comprised of business owners, residents, and other stakeholders on ,.
<br />Portage Avenue. The corridor runs along the northeast edge of the purposed Weed and
<br />Seed site. The PASC advises the City of South Bend on how to spend funds for physical
<br />improvements and business assistance programs to enhance commerce and aesthetic
<br />appeal. This organization can contribute to program ten.
<br />Provider: Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County (YSB)
<br />The YSB is a community-based non-profit organization that serves the needs of youth.
<br />They offer Young-Moms Self Sufficiency, Safe Station (similar to a Safe Heaven), and
<br />Youth Development programs. This organization can contribute to programs one, five,
<br />six, seven, and eleven.
<br />Provider: Holy Cross Catholic School
<br />Kennedy Elementary School
<br />LaSalle Academy
<br />Muessel Elementary School
<br />The schools above are located in and serve .the residents of the purposed Weed and Seed
<br />site. They can contribute to programs one, five, seven, and nine.
<br />Provider: Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center (MLK Center)
<br />The MLK Center is a public recreation center in the purposed Weed and Seed site, which
<br />offers youth, adult, and senior programs. The recently remodeled facility offers afull-size
<br />gymnasium, fitness room, computer lab, senior citizen's room with kitchen, and a
<br />meeting/theater room. This center can contribute to programs one, six, nine, and eleven.
<br />The MLK Center will be a Safe Haven for the Weed and Seed area.
<br />Provider: Charles Martin Youth Center (CMYC)
<br />The CMYC is a meeting place for social, business and governmental gatherings. The
<br />Center is home to the After School Program, Notre Dame Educational Talent Search,
<br />South Bend Friends Meeting, 21st Century Scholars, Girls Scouts of Singing Sand, New
<br />Discoveries Preschool and Saint Mary's College Community Outreach Center. This center
<br />can contribute to programs one, five, six, seven, and eleven.
<br />Providers: Religious Institutions
<br />There are twenty-five religious institutions within the proposed Weed and Seed site. While
<br />each institution has differing levels of capacity to assist in the Weed and Seed Strategy, as
<br />a whole, they can contribute to all of the programs by disseminating information within
<br />their congregations and through their outreach ministries.
<br />VII. COORDINATION COMPONENTS
<br />VII. A. PARTNERSHIPS, COLLABORATIONS AND FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL,
<br />PRIVATE AND TRIBAL PROGRAM COORDINATION
<br />Federal Partnerships/Collaboration:
<br />^ COPS in SCHOOLS Program -Partnership between the U.S. Department of Justice
<br />(COPS), South Bend Community School Corporation and SBPD to place Sworn Police
<br />Officers in South Bend High and Intermediate Schools as School Resource Officer's and
<br />as members of the school's faculty and staff. Grant amount of $375,000.
<br />• PROJECT DISARM -Partnership with U.S. Department of Justice. Project Safe
<br />Neighborhood's Violent and Gun Crime Reduction Federal/Local Task Force that targets
<br />suspects that possess, sell, trade, use, or deals in weapons as well as use weapons
<br />during the commission of crimes in South Bend. Grant amount of $37,125.
