This is the first City Department to commit to such strict restrictions. <br />* A NEW Body Armor Quartermaster System whereby the City <br />will purchase new body armor vests for each member of the Uniform Division <br />and will also purchase twelve (12) body armor vest each year and make them <br />available on a first come first serve basis to non-Uniform Division police on a <br />needed basis. <br />This ordinance would also establish competitive base salaries for all <br />ranks in the South Bend Police Department. The attached chart shows the base <br />The ordinance would maintain special duty pays for special hazazdous <br />duties performed by the SOS Undercover, SOS, K-9 Units, SWAT, Bomb <br />Technicians and the hostage negotiators. <br />The annual cash allowance is recommended to be set at $ 2,200 each <br />year of the package. This allowance incorporates the former gun/radio <br />allowance which is currently paid separately. Compliance with uniform upkeep <br />and maintenance standards is required of all police officers receiving such <br />allowance with deductions possible for non-compliance. <br />Longevity pay has been maintained at its current levels, as have court <br />time pay and overtime pay. The "Tuition Reimbursement" program has been <br />revamped to provide a greater amount of reimbursement based on the higher <br />the course grade earned. "Operation Safe Neighborhood" will be continued at <br />its current reimbursement rate of $ 1,500 to officers who live in designated <br />areas of the City. Life insurance will increase from $ 15,000 to $ 20,000 in the <br />year 2000.
