REGULAR MEETING MARCH 23, 2015 Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana met in the Council Chambers of the County-City Building on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Council President Tim Scott and the Invocation given by (Laura Vasquez) and Pledge to the Flag were given. Talboom Deputy Kareemah Fowler Chief Deputy REPORT FROM THE SUB-COMMITTEE ON MINUTES th Councilmember Henry Davis made a motion that the minutes of the March 9, 2015, meeting of the Council be accepted and placed on file. Councilmember Schey seconded the motion which carried by a voice vote of eight (8) ayes and one (1) nay by Councilmember Derek Dieter. SPECIAL BUSINESS 15-14 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, DECLARING THE WEEK OF MARCH 23 – 31, 2015 AS FARMWORKER AWARENESS WEEK IN SOUTH BEND, INDIANA , the South Bend Common Council notes that Farmworkers Awareness Week is a week of Whereas action to raise awareness about farmworker issues in our communities; and th , this year marks the 16 Annual Farmworker Awareness Week which provides Whereas opportunities to learn about the farmworker conditions and to honor their important contributions to society; and ,85% of our fruits and vegetables are handpicked by an estimated two million men, women Whereas and children working in farm fields throughout the United States which the Fair Labor Standards Act being amended in 1978 to require minimum wages for farmworkers on large farms only; and , this year Farmworker Awareness Week coincides with the birthday of Cesar Chavez’s Whereas birthday on March 31st. who dedicated himself to non-violent organizing for just wages, safer working conditions and dignity for the men, women and children who toil in the fields, with Indiana farms employing over 39,000 seasonal and migrant farmworkers who contribute to the agricultural industry of our state.
