ORDINANCE NO. <br />/7- <br />THAT WEREAS, by an emergency statute approved March 3, 1945, after <br />passage by the Indiana General Assembly as Chapter 122 of the Laws of 1945, <br />an act was adopted known as "Indiana Veterans' Affairs Law", and <br />I ^M EREAS, by this act it was provided that cities in the State of <br />Indiana would have the power to provide for theiendering of service to <br />returned veterans and their families, and <br />!NHEREAS, a non - partisan committee of leading citizens of South Bend <br />have studied the matter and have recommended to the Mayor that immediate steps <br />be taken for the rendering of such service, and <br />jul EREAS, such service will be directly of value to returned vetetans <br />and their families and indirectly to the City of South Bend. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Common Council of the City <br />of South Bend that: <br />1. A Veterans' Service of be, and the same is hereby, created <br />to function within the City of South Bend, Indiana, said e+13s.to consist of <br />residents of the City appointed thereto by the Mayor for terms of not more than <br />one year and eligible to re- appointment, and said bs i shall consist of such <br />number of members as the Mayor in his sole discretion shall determine is necessary <br />for its proper functioning. <br />2. The said Veterans' ServicA.WaKdf—shall have the power and the duty <br />to advise with the ,Mayor, and with the Chief Service Officer, and shall have the <br />power and duty to make public all information necessary or advisable in connection <br />with the operation of the 46vmYs4*r and the performance of the duties of the Chief <br />Service Officer. <br />3. There shall be appointed by the Mayor a Chief Service officer who <br />shall remain in office during the pleasure of the Mayor, and who shall be quilified <br />for said office in accordance with Chapter 122 of the Laws of 1945.
