REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 27, 2008 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. <br /> <br />Melissa Machowiak, 56830 Elmer, South Bend, Indiana, spoke in favor of this <br />Resolution. She thanks Ms. Harman for her continued dedication to the children of the <br />South Bend Community. Ms. Machowiak noted that she is a crossing guard. <br /> <br />Ms. Carla Killelea, 17962 Sundrop Ct., Granger, Indiana, spoke in favor of this <br />Resolution. She stated that she is the Principal at Warren Primary Center and is very <br />proud to have Tania Harman as a teacher. She applauded her teaching style to meet the <br />needs of each of her students especially those who are unfamiliar with the English <br />language. <br /> <br />Ms. Kathleen Miller, no address given, stated that she is honored to work with Tania at <br />Warren Primary Center. She stated that Tania is an outstanding classroom teacher who is <br />exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled; and who inspires students and <br />teachers. <br /> <br />Tania Harman thanked the Council for this honor. She stated that her students came to <br />this country seeking a better way of life, and she holds the key to that door and knowing <br />those students is a powerful way to get to the heart of a lesson for each individual. <br /> <br />There was no one else present wishing to speak to the Council either in favor of or in <br />opposition to this Resolution. <br /> <br />Councilmember Puzzello made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. <br />Councilmember Oliver Davis seconded the motion which carried. <br /> <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3912-08 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON <br /> COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br /> BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY <br /> COMMENDING SKYLAR DIGGINS OF <br /> WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR <br /> HER MANY ACADEMIC TALENTS AND <br /> FOR BEING SELECTED THE NATION’S <br /> NO 1 POINT GUARD IN THE 2009 <br /> CLASS <br /> <br /> Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, is proud to <br />recognize that Skylar Diggins, a senior at Washington High School, who has a 3.87 GPA; <br />is a member of the National Honor Society; is ranked in the top ten (10) in her high <br />school class; and volunteers with youth groups at the Martin Luther King Recreation <br />Center; and <br /> <br /> Whereas, the Common Council recognizes that Skylar Diggins is ranked No. 1 in <br />the nation in the 2009 class by ESPN HoopGurlz, and as a point guard for the South Bend <br />Washington Lady Panthers Basketball Team is known as “one of the most savvy players <br />on the court…and an incredible competitor..”, and <br /> <br /> Whereas, Skylar Diggins stands 5’9” and “…being left handed really gives <br />defenses fits”, & as a proficient 3-point shooter has excellent range a few feet behind the <br />arc, along with her pull-up jumper. Skylar was named to the AP All-State Girls <br />Basketball Team for the 2007-2008 season; as a sophomore in 2006 played in the City <br />Securities Hall of Fame Classic & was named to the AAU National All-American Team; <br />and <br /> <br /> Whereas, Skylar Diggins was named the “Burger King Outstanding Student <br />Athlete of the Week” in February of this year; and was named the 2008 Gatorade Indiana <br />Girls Basketball Player of the Year which recognizes “outstanding athletic excellence as <br />well as academic achievement and exemplary character: with Skylar leading the Lady <br /> 3 <br /> <br />
