<br />Whereas, Tania L. Harman is a bilingual grade one and two teacher at Warren
<br />th
<br />Primary Center; is in her 20 year of teaching in the South Bend Community School
<br />Corporation, having previously taught at Kennedy, Monroe, Lafayette and Wilson before
<br />coming to Warren Primary Center; and
<br />
<br />Whereas, the South Bend Common Council notes that the Indiana Department of
<br />Education annually conducts an Indiana Teacher of the Year Program which honors the
<br />“outstanding classroom teacher across the state” who is “exceptionally dedicated,
<br />knowledgeable, and skilled”; who inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to
<br />learn; has the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues; plays an active
<br />and useful role in the community as well as in the school; and is “poised, articulate, and
<br />possesses the energy to withstand a taxing schedule”; and
<br />
<br />Whereas, on September 22, 2008, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction
<br />Dr. Suellen Reed, named Tania L. Harman the 2009 Indiana Teacher of the Year from the
<br />63 public and nonpublic educators who were nominated by local school superintendents
<br />
<br />from across the state of Indiana for this coveted honor, and Tania L. Harmanwill be
<br />th
<br />honored at a dinner at the Hilton Indianapolis North on November 5; and
<br />
<br />Whereas, the South Bend Common Council believes that Tania L. Harman truly
<br />represents education excellence at its best with Tania L. Harman being known for
<br />adjusting her teaching style to meet the needs of each of her students, and especially
<br />those who are unfamiliar with the English language. Ms. Harman noted that:
<br />
<br />“They came to this country seeking a better way of life, and I hold the key to that door
<br />…Knowing my students is a powerful way to get to the heart of a lesson for each
<br />individual”.
<br />
<br /> Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South
<br />Bend, Indiana, as follows:
<br />
<br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the
<br />,
<br />Common Council hereby publicly commends and congratulates Tania L. Harmana
<br />
<br />bilingual grade one and two teacher atWarren Primary Centerfor being named the 2009
<br />Indiana Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, which is
<br />the highest of all teaching honors in the State of Indiana.
<br />
<br />
<br />Section II The Council wishes Tania L. Harmancontinued success as an
<br />outstanding teacher in the South Bend Community School Corporation, and hopes that
<br />she will continue to add to her many honors the 2009 National Teacher of the Year
<br />Award which will be announced in April of 2009 in Washington, D.C.
<br />
<br />Section III . This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its
<br />adoption by the Council and approval by the Mayor.

<br />presentation for this Resolution by first offering her comments and then reading the
<br />Resolution in its entirety and presenting it to Ms. Harman.
