The Common Council of
City Hall
South Bend, Indiana
Honorable Body:
1926 Trent B 'Iay
South Bend 14,
June 21, 1961
the City of South Bend
Indiana
The League of `;Women Voters of South Bend urges you
to bring the proposed new building code out of the com-
mittee of the whole to the council floor for deliberation
and action. 'We believe the period of time which council
members have had to study the proposed code is sufficient
for informed decisions to be made at this time.
In 1954 the South Bend League made a study of build-
ing codes and went on record as advocating an up -to -date
and comprehensive building code for the city. ?'We also
recognized the desirability of a performance code rather
than a specification code.
Since that time a new building; code has been present-
ed to the council to replace an outdated and unworkable one,,
which is unworthy of a progressive city like South Bend.
If there are objections to or questions concerning some
provisions in the code, let them be heard by all and, if
necessary, amendments made so as to speed ratification of
the entire code.
k
Yours very sincerely,
P.irs. George I. Brown
President, League of
';Women Voters of South
Bend
