classic examples of this style of architecture. The first story windows have molded entablatures,
there is a pent roof over the side entrance with arc-shaped brackets, and an arched window with
decorative keystone in the attic.
RECOMMENDATION
This site and structure should be recommended to the Common Council for designation as a
Local Landmark.
It meets three criteria:
1) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, material, or
craftsmanship which represent an architectural characteristic or innovation;
2) Its suitability for preservation;
3) 3) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical significance.
This Commission just last month determined a rating of Significant-12 using the National
Register criteria for evaluation.
Now that it has been so sensitively restored, it is eminently suitable for preservation.
Additionally, its location in the Shetterly Place and Shetterly Addition area is such that the area will
benefit from having its neighborhood history preserved by landmark designation of this house
It is more strongly identified than probably any other structure or place with both the Miller
and the Shetterly families, both of whom played important roles in developing South Bend.
G~~~ ~ i~ ?C1~~
~.on~rrn~. au~~
~17Y C1.ER'~, ~• drrlv'~, E'~,
