Frank i's a planner wtth: tfie 'United War of St. Joseph County. He had formerly, directed a SCHOOL SEWPCE CQORDW ATOR Program in the East. After several discussions witfi_h m about the, program and some preliminary, discussions with the Scfiool Corporatbn officials, we determined that we would start a pilot project to investigate its application to our caseloads and our juvenile referrals. The philosophy of our Youth Service Bureau has been eclectic because of the nature of its establishment and I am very proud of the way our community has been able to respond to the changing needs in the juvenile system. The SCHOOL SERVICE COORDINATOR Program is an efficient use of the limited staff resources of the Youth Service Bureau. With nearly 40 students handled in three months of operation, we expect a potential caseload of between 75 and 100 students per school. If our five -man staff could handle two schools each for 6 - 9 hours a week (over and above our regular referrals) we could greatly increase our capacity. This proposal was wholeheartedly endorsed by the Intake Committee of our Executive Board and approved by the full Youth Service Bureau Executive Committee. The following report is in the words of the Director of the Perley Project, George McCullough. George is 24 years old, with a B.A. in Secondary Education. Because he is black and was a former Recreation Director of the East Side of South Bend, he was the logical choice to head this exciting new phase of the Youth Service Bureau. "The program consists of the combined efforts of the coordinator who is directly in charge of the program; the Youth Service Bureau Director, who is the immediate supervisor of the coordinator; and the school's Principal, administration, counselors, and teachers, who make referrals and suggest alternatives for the students. The SCHOOL SERVICE COORDINATOR Program is designed to assist the students and faculty with any social and behavioral problem that would be present in the school setting, identify potential problem children, and those with problems, at an early age, and try to resolve them. The Coordinator will refer any student that needs services of another social agency to that agency upon the decision of the Coordinator, counselor and the Director of the Youth Service Bureau. The bulk of the students have so far been referred to the following agencies: 1. Big Brothers 5. Catholic Social Services 2. Big Sisters 6. Mental Health Center 3. Welfare Department 7. Boys Scouts of America 4. Family and Children's Center 8. Y.M.C.A.
