Kelzenberg, Director
Bureau of Employment
and Training
In order to adequately prepare for the summer weed control
program, I have put together a brief over view of last summers's results
and costs.
A total of 637 different sites were cleaned and cut at
least once. Many of these lots were cut a second time. Approximately
125 youth working on 12 crews participated in the effort. Each crew
was directed by an adult supervisor.
Some $15,000.00 in federal revenue sharing funds were
appropriated by the City Council for the effort. In fact, the report
from Mike Vance indicates that actual city contribution was $18,129,23.
(See enclosed report.) In addition, $1,956.34 was spent for supplies
and equipment from CETA summer funds. (See attached) as well as $749.83
for lease of an additional Hertz Van.
Consequently, it appears that the per lot cost of controlling
weeds through the program is about $32.00 in equipment and supplies.
This of course does not include wages and fringe benefits for the youth,
which is provided by CETA. The size of the program is contingent on the
amount of funds made available by the city. Last summer it cost
approximately $20,000 to control the 637 sites.
10
