Department of Public Parks
Administration Building
St. Louis Boulevard at Wayne Street
South Bend, Indiana 46617
PHONE: 1219) 284 -9401
March 8, 1977
Mr. Roger Parent, President
South Bend Common Council
County -City Building
227 West Jefferson Boulevard
South Bend, Indiana
Dear Mr. Parent:
The Department of Public Parks is requesting the Common Council to approve
the enclosed ordinance to appropriate $5,000.00 from Community Development
Funds to Account #441.0, Materials, Seeds, Trees and Flowers. The money
will be used to purchase trees and materials to plant trees in the North-
west Neighborhood area. Trees will be planted in the tree lawn area and if
the tree lawn area is too narrow or if there is no tree lawn area, the tree
can be planted on private property. The Park Department will not do the
planting.
The park staff has met with representatives of the Northwest Neighborhood
Association, the group that proposed the funds for tree planting, to work
out details for the tree planting program.
I feel that an important part of the proposed tree program is the involvement
of the citizens from the neighborhood area. The Northwest Neighborhood
Association will survey the area and contact person who want trees and who
will take an active part in the tree program. The person who request trees
must dig the hole, plant the trees and maintain the tree. The Park Department
will purchase the trees and transport the trees to the planting sites. The
Park Department will give assistance and advice on the planting and maintenance
of the trees.
Such a tree planting program could enhance the environment of our city and help
beautify the neighborhoods of our city. If the tree planting proves successful,
in the Northwest Neighborhood Association area, similar programs can take place
in other sections of the city.
enclosure
Very truly yours,
