Patrick M. McMahon, P.E.
Director, Public Works
CITY of SOUTH BEND
PETER J. NEMETH, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
May 4, 1977
Members of the Common Council
441 County /City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
RE: Johnson Street Sanitary Sewer
Dear Councilmen:
219/284 -9251
The attached ordinance, appropriating $233,000.00 from the Cumulative
Sewer Building and Sinking Fund, will enable this Department to enter into
a contract for the repair of the sanitary sewer located in Johnson Street,
between Lincoln Way West and Fassnacht Street. This existing sanitary sewer
is a trunk line which services a large area west of this location.
Over the last fifteen months the Bureau of Sanitation has been called upon
to make repairs to this line at a number of locations. After visually in-
specting and reviewing the condition of this sewer, we concur with the
Bureau of Sanitation's request that it be replaced. Due to the size and
nature of the project, plans and specifications have been prepared for the
bidding of this work.
This particular segment of Johnson Street is also included in the storm sewer
program currently under contract in the Model Cities Neighborhood. Due to
the nature of the work involved in replacing the existing sanitary sewer, we
have chosen to delete the storm sewer installation proposed under the Model
Cities Contract from that particular contract and have added it to the pro-
posed contract for the repair of the sanitary facilities, thus placing all
work on Johnson Street under the control of a single contractor. It is
noted for the information of the Council that the total dollar reduction in
the Model Cities contract, as a result of this activity, will be approximately
$75,000.
Your favorable concurrence is requested.
Ver truly yours,
r MdMah/on/, a rick M. P.E.
Director
PMMc:amc
