Page Three
Bureau of Sanitation
Budget Line Item Explanation - 1978
324 Other Garage and Motor Supplies $ 14,000.00
(1977 - $12,000.00)
Since we maintain a garage and mechanics to work on all
of our equipment, it is essential that we provide them
the flexibility to handle all these repairs. This in-
cludes the right parts and supplies, i.e., oil filters, air
filters, brake and drum assemblies, welding rods, hand tools,
shop towels, rags and other miscellaneous items.
331 Household Laundry & Cleaning 5,000.00
(1977 - $4,500.00)
Summer and winter uniforms for 37 employees. Also janitor
supplies used in the upkeep of the structure.
333 Other Institutional & Medical 4,000.00
(1977 - $4,000.00)
We try to encourage safety among our employees. One way
is by sharing the cost (50 %) of one (1) pair of safety
shoes per year, per employee. We also furnish different
types of gloves, hard hats, winter hard hat liners, foul
weather gear and equipment reflectors and back -up alarms
for vehicles.
363 Other Office Supplies 350.00
(1977 - $350.00)
Paper, pens, clipboards, time cards, record books, city
maps, street guides and other supplies necessary to run
an office.
370 Other Supplies 20,000.00
(1977 - $22,000.00)
Using this account we purchased manhole covers and rings to
replace those that may break during the course of the year.
At a per unit cost of $180.00, this enables us to replace
the many manhole rings and covers and catchbasin covers that
need repair throughout the City. If you consider the 7,000
manholes that are contained in the 400 miles of sewer that
we maintain, this does not seem like an excessive request.
This account also enables us to carry out our repair activities
on sewers which have stopped functioning or cave in. Some of
the items purchased from this account are catchbasin frames and
covers, pipe connecting elbows, tiles of assorted sizes, sand and
cement and brick for adjusting manholes. The amount of paving
the Bureau of Streets has scheduled, determines the amount of
concrete we use. Since we raise all of our street sewer structures,
also included in these supplies are backfill materials and precast
manholes. We believe that it is also fair to assume that our
experience with caved -in sewers will become more, rather than less
frequent during the coming years.
