ORDINANCE <br />AN ORDINANCE APPROPRIATING FROM THE STATE CIGARETTE TAX <br />HIGHWAY DISTRIBUTION FUND THE SUM OF FORTY -FIVE THOUSAND <br />EIGHT HUNDRED FOURTEEN DOLLARS AND SIX CENTS ($45,814.06) <br />FOR REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAYS, STREETS AND ALLEYS <br />OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AND DECLARING THE <br />EXISTENCE OF AN EXTRAORDINARY EMERGENCY. <br />This ordinance was given first and second reading. Councilman Korpal made a motion that the ordinance be <br />referred to the Committee of the Whole for Public Hearing on June 28th, 1948, at 8:00 P.M. Councilman Erler <br />seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />REPORT OF TRAFFIC ENGINEER <br />Members of the Common Council <br />City Hall <br />South Bend 5, Indiana <br />Gentlement <br />June 7, 1948 <br />Attention: Mr. Korpal <br />I have investigated the hazardous conditions at the southwest corner of Colfax Avenue and Michigan Street due <br />to the location of the Indiana Cab Stand, as requested at your last regular Council Meeting, May 24, 1948. <br />At present three. -cabs park at this location, the first within 10 feet of the Michigan Street Crosswalk. <br />In leaving the,stand, considerable hazard and confusion is encountered with regular traffic on Colfax Avenue, <br />:especially whesf cabs make a left turn north into Michigan Street or when Colfax traffic turns south into Michigan <br />Street. <br />Indiana Cab Company officials have agreed to a reduction in the number of cabs from three to two at this location, <br />thereby holding the first cab 30 feet back of the Michigan Street crosswalk. This will provide for'better <br />maneuverability at this location. The Cab Company•officials further agreed to instruct their drivers to use <br />extreme caution when leaving this stand so as to avoid conflict with moving traffic on Colfax Avenue. <br />fn <br />Very truly yours,, <br />ERNEST H. Motion carried. <br />MOT IONS <br />Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the City Attorney be instructed to prepare an Ordinance to the effect <br />that Indiana Avenue be declared a boulevard and submit to the Council at their next regular meeting on June 28thf <br />Councilman Kemper seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />Councilman Korpal made a motion that the next Regular Meeting of the Common Council be held on June 28th instead <br />of June 14th, 1948.
