<br />ACQUIRING AND REGULATION OF PARKING METERSy PRESCRIBING PARKING TIME
<br />LIMITS; REQUIRING DEPOSITS OF COINS FOR THE USE OF PARKING METERS AND
<br />PARKING '.METER ZONES AND PROVIDING FOR THE COLLECTION AND DISPOSITION
<br />OF SUCH COINS; REPEALING CONFLICTING ORDINANCES; PROVIDING FOR THE

<br />This ordinance was given first and second reading. Councilman Korpal made a notion that the Ordinance be
<br />referred to the Committee of the Whole for Public Hearing on June 7, 1948, at 8:00 P.M. Councilman Muszy nski
<br />seconded the motion. Motion carried.

<br />THE PURCHASE OF THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: CONTRACT WITH
<br />ENGLEWOOD ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY FOR THE PURCHASE OF SIGNAL EQUIPMENT,
<br />$2,636.00; -COI•TTRACT WITH LODYGA AND SONS FOR THE PURCHASE OF LAVATORY AND
<br />SHOWER FITTINGS, $2,043.00; CONTRACT WITH MAXIM MOTOR COMPANY FOR THE

<br />The ordinance was given third reading and passed by a roll call vote of 8 ayes - nays.
<br />RESOLUTION
<br />WHEREAS, the City of South Bend now pays into the State General Fund $243,000.00 through the imposition
<br />and collection of a State property tax of 15,d per hundred dollars of assessed valuation, and
<br />WHEREAS, it is claimed that the State of Indiana has a cash surplus of over sixty million dollars, and
<br />the City of South Bend does not have sufficient money or tax resources from which to meet its necessary expenses,
<br />and
<br />WHEREAS, over twenty States have eliminated the general property tax rate and released this tax base to
<br />the local communities of their States, and
<br />WHEREAS, organizations of citizens throughout the State of Indiana are advocating the abolition of the
<br />State property tax rate,
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: The 'Common Council of the City of South Bend, in regular meeting convened
<br />this 24 day of May, 1948, does hereby respectfully request the State Board of Finance to eliminate the State
<br />property tax under the provisions of Chapter 27, Section 10 of the Acts of 1941 by determining that the revenues
<br />of the State which will be received during the current fiscal year are sufficient to meet the demands against
<br />such revenues and thereby release the State property tax rate of 15/ to help finance local government needs.
<br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That we respectfully petition the 1949 General Assembly of the State of Indiana
<br />to enact the necessary legislation to provide for the elimination of the State property tax rate and to direct
<br />the financing of State government from otter sources of revenue.
<br />AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to the State Board of
<br />Finance, to the Governor, State Auditor, State Treasurer and to the local press.
