113 <br />kconzlnuea) <br />keep INPA going, and <br />WHEREAS; If 1200 South Bend WPA workers are laid off it will mean at least $72,000 of the presen <br />buying power running through the trade channels of the city being withdravn and at the <br />same time the forcing back on relief of over x!,800 dependents, which will result in a <br />falling off of business for the businessmen accompanied by a corresponding rise in <br />local taxes in order to pay for the $24,000 per month additional relief load which will <br />be brought about by such-layoffs, and <br />WHEREAS: The effects of this inadequate appropriation on the businessmen, unemployed, laboring <br />groups and the citizens generally may be avoided by Congress voting for the needed <br />$+150,000,000 as proposed by the President, and <br />INHEREAS: This City Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana_, realizing their responsibility <br />to and acting in the interests of the citizens of this city, in the light of the above <br />mentioned facts, do hereby <br />RESOLVE,: To go-. on record-urging our Congressmen to support President Roosevelt's request for a <br />$150,000,000 appropriation for WPA, before April, and be it further <br />RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be sent to President Roosevelt, our congressmen from the <br />State of Indiana, and Herbert Benjamin, National Secretary of the Workers Alliance, <br />1211 Eye St., N.W., Washington, D.C. <br />Councilman Bishop ma.de a motion that the Resolution be adopted. Dollars (,110,000.00) be and the same is hereby allocated from accounj <br />H -27, Department of Public Works in the 1939 Budget to special WPA Account, and that this amount <br />so allocated by the Common Council may be used during the year 1939, for the purchase of materials <br />labor and other items chargeable to the various City WPA projects, subject to the approval of the <br />Board of Works.
