Honey Bee Keeping Regulations Ordinance <br /> Page 4 <br /> Law troth TvDe Hive: a hive consisting of an outer frame with a solid top cover an inner <br /> cover, a bottom board, and a number of boxes„ d supers containing.tightly spaced movable frames. <br /> Lot: a piece, arcel lot or tract of land design <br /> ated by its owner or developer to be used <br /> developed or built upon as a unit under single ownership or control and rnLay consist of: <br /> (1} A single lot or record; or <br /> (2) A combination of com fete Iots ofrecord.3 <br /> Nucleus Colony: a small colony of bees resulting from a colony division, or a„qpeen-mating <br /> hive used b queen„breeders. <br /> Super: A wooden box with frames containing foundation or drawn comb in which hones is <br /> to be produced. <br /> See. 5-52-----Honey Bee Kee its Public Safe Re raIations. <br /> (a) Any_person desiring to raise the common domestic honeybee, limited to the Apis <br /> mellifera species, must comply with the following_ ublic safety regulations <br /> (b) The maximum number of colonies based on the size of the lot which shall be limited <br /> to the following: <br /> • Up to % acre Two (2) colonies <br /> • More than '/ acre but less than <br /> ' Four ,4 colonies <br /> _ 2 acre . <br /> • % acre but less than 1 acre _T Six (6) colonies <br /> • 1 acre or more Eight $ colonies <br /> (c) A_nuc..leus colony may be kept for up to a 30-day period at one (1) for every colony. <br /> (d) No hive shall exceed seventeen 17 cubic feet in volume. <br /> (e) Location Requirements: <br /> 1. All colonies shall be located behind the building. <br /> 2. Beehives must have a flyway barrier which is located at least ten feet I0” in <br /> front of the entrance to the hive at a height of six feet 6' if the hive's <br /> entrance is located within fifteen feet LQ LS' of the property line. <br /> 3 South Bend Municipal Code§ 21-11.02 sets forth the zoning definition for"lot" <br />
