REGULAR MEETING MARCH 13, 1989 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the <br />Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m. The <br />meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Luecke, Niezgodski, <br />Soderberg, Puzzello, Slavinskas, Zakrzewski, <br />Coleman, Duda and Voorde <br />Absent: None <br />REPORT FROM THE SUB- COMMITTEE ON MINUTES <br />To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: <br />The sub - committee has inspected the minutes of the February 27 meeting of the <br />Council and found them correct. <br />Therefore, we recommend the same be approved. <br />/s/ John Voorde <br />/s/ Ann Puzzello <br />Council Member Coleman made a motion that the minutes of the February 27, meeting <br />of the Council be accepted and placed on file, seconded by Council Member Luecke. <br />The motion carried. <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />Council Member Puzzello made a motion to set the next meeting on Tuesday, March 28, <br />at 5:00 p.m., seconded by Council Member Soderberg. The motion carried. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1709 -89 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA DESIGNATING MARCH 12 - 18, 1989 AS <br />NATIONAL ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION WEEK IN THE <br />CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA. <br />WHEREAS, national statistics indicate that there are 27 million adults who are <br />functionally illiterate and in need of basic skills and instruction, and <br />WHEREAS, there has been a significant growth in the population aged 65 years <br />or older with over 23 million Americans in that age category; and <br />WHEREAS, adult education and continuing education programs offer opportunities <br />for personal growth, job enrichment and career advancement, as well as providing <br />programs for the special needs of displaced workers, high school drop outs, the <br />handicapped, and the older adults; and <br />WHEREAS, throughout the nation at the federal, state, county and local levels <br />of government private and public educational institutions are being commended for <br />their positive impact and highly successful continuing education programs. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council publicly commends all public and private educational institutions for <br />providing adult and continuing education programs to the residents of our area. <br />SECTION II. The Common Council hereby declares March 12 through March 18, 1989 <br />as "National Adult and Continuing Education Week in the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana." <br />SECTION III. The Common Council encourages all citizens to celebrate and <br />support such adult and continuing education programs which are "dedicated to the <br />dynamic learning process that never ends." <br />SECTION IV.
