OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
CITY ®f SOUTH BEND
ROGER O. PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
March 4, 1981
AREA 219 284 -9261
South Bend Common Council
City of South Bend
County -City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear Council Members:
In March, 1980, I asked the South Bend Commission on the
Status of Women to consider the option of placing the Women's
Commission within the structure of the Human Rights Commission.
As you know, the South Bend Commission on the Status of
Women was established by ordinance in June 1974. The long -range
goal of the Commission was to bring women into full and equal
partnership in the life of the community.
During the last six years, the Commission, has made great
strides toward that goal and has made many significant accom-
plishments, including helping to stimulate an awareness among
both men and women of women's full potential and of the importance
of their contributions to the development of the community.
In May, 1980, the South Bend Commission on the Status of
Women voted to recommend to the South Bend Human Rights Commission
that the Women's Commission become a committee of the Human Rights
Commission.
In January, 1981, the Human Rights Commission voted to accept
the Women's Commission as a standing committee of the Human Rights
Commission. The Human Rights Commission appointed Mara Newman as
the chairperson of the newly formed committee and the Women's
Committee has already held two organizational meetings.
Therefore, the attached ordinance deletes the Commission on
the Status of Women from the Municipal Code.
Thank you for your consideration of this issue.
Since--J y,
R er . Parent
