PARENT, Mayor COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601 Members of the Common Council South Bend Common Council City of South Bend Dear Council Members: 30 April 1982 2191284 -9322 There will be at first reading of the May 10th Council Meeting an ordinance appropriating $28,326.00 from the Sewer Repair Fund. Through this ordinance funding will be provided for the full time position of inspector. If you will recall, the enabling ordinance which originally set up the sewer repair program included provisions for providing oper- ating funds for that purpose. I've enclosed a summary of charges made against the fund since its inception in 1981 and through May of 1982. There were a total of 13 claims for the 7 months of 1981 in which it operated, compared to 11 claims in 5 months of 1982. Clearly the frequency of claims has in- creased, and we would expect that trend to continue. A balance of $205,399.51 existed in the fund at the end of April, 1982. Monthly contributions are currently running at a level of $9,500 per month. On this basis taking into account our current level of ex- penditures, it appears we will not have to look at any adjustment in the 25 cent rate. This is strictly a preliminary estimate and should not be given any more weight than that. As happens every spring, we see an increase in the number of sewer failures both private and in the public right -of -way. In order to ad- dress these additional problems, more supervision will become essential in keeping up with both workloads. If you have additional questions, feel free to call my office.
