SOUTH BEND PUBLIC UTILITIES
224 North Main Street
P.O. Box 1714
MICHAEL L. VANCE
Director of Utilities
Mrs. Beverlie Beck
President
Common Council
City of South Bend
Dear Mrs. Beck:
CITY of SOUTH BEND
ROGER O. PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
February 22, 1983
219/284 -9322
The ordinance enclosed will be filed for first reading of the
February 28, 1983 Council Meeting. If approved, the ordinance will
provide $52,500 in funding for the renovation of manhole structures.
In recent years the City through its Department of Sanitation has
seen an increasing number of manhole.collapses or failure through
structural fatigue. What I would propose through the use of these
funds is that the older brick manholes specifically those on South
Main from Sample south to Ewing to be renovated. The process
would involve, the internal cleaning of these units by our people,
the lining of them with a reinforcing material, and then the
spraying of a liquid concrete /cement known as gunite (trade name).
When the units have dried and set, you have a sealed structurally
sound liner that keeps infiltration to a minimum and adds strength
to the aged structure. This appears to have potential as an alter-
native to manhole replacement at the time of failure.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact
me.
Sincerely,
jj%e V"-.—
Michael L. Vance
Director of Utilities
MLV /mtw
Enclosure
