Phipps Plaza Demolition Package
Atlanta, Georgia
Adamo was the Prime Contractor
for this project, located in Atlanta,
Georgia. This project encompassed
a major redevelopment of a
significant part of the Phipps Plaza
Mall in the Buckhead region of
Atlanta, Georgia. The crucial
components of the demolition
phase included complete and
selective demolition. The
demolition included the removal of
a 3-story, precast parking structure,
along with a 3-level, 450,000 square foot
Anchor Department Store (Belk). The Atlanta
Fire Department, Station #3, located
underneath the parking deck was also part of
the complete demolition.
The existing Belk department store and
adjoining parking deck structure were
demolished to the ground level, from the top
to the bottom, being cut in plan at the line
between the mall proper and the connecting
face of the store. A small section of the deck
was preserved in order to maintain
uninterrupted public vehicular and pedestrian access to the Phipps Tower building on the adjacent
property. All footings, foundations, walls
and slabs were removed within the
building footprint.
The pilings for future development were
able to be started in parallel with
demolition finishing up. Adamo was able
to complete this project while the
attached Mall stayed in operation. Adamo
received zero complaints from the high
end adjacent living quarters, which
surround the development. As part of the
sustainable redevelopment plan, 18,000
tons of concrete and rebar, along with 200
tons of asphalt from the parking deck
were removed, recycled and will be repurposed and used for other projects. This project started in
October, 2018 and was completed in July, 2019.
