REGULAR MEETING APRIL 24, 2000 <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />SECTION 1. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, hereby encourages <br />all residents of the City of complete their census forms and be counted in this historic 21St Decennial <br />Census taking place across America. <br />SECTION II. The Council encourages the decision making teams in all schools, churches, <br />synagogues, businesses, libraries, grocery stores, gas stations, radio channels and television channels <br />to initiate programs to make sure each census form is completed in each of the thirty -eight (38) <br />census tracks in our City by: <br />1. Daily public announcements urging everyone to complete their census forms. <br />2. Initiating programs to promote high census form completion rates by their students, <br />employees, customers, parishioners and clients. <br />3. Doing all that is necessary to be counted and by calling the local Census Office (219) <br />245 -5150 which covers a six (6) county area for more information. <br />SECTION III. The Common Council urges the City Clerk's Office to send a copy of this <br />Resolution to the heads of the South Bend Community School Corporation, the Fort Wayne /South <br />Bend Diocese for schools, the United Religious Community, the Chamber of Commerce, the Better <br />Business Bureau, the local radio and television stations, and the local unions, urging their <br />participation. The Council urges each of these entities to send a representative to the Monday, May <br />8, 2000 meeting of the Common Council to update the Council on their efforts under "Unfinished <br />Business." <br />SECTION IV. Luecke, Mayor <br />Council President Pfeifer read the Resolution in its entirety and presented it to Mr. Larry Magliozzi, <br />Assistant Director, Planning & Neighborhood Development, Community & Economic Development, <br />205 West Jefferson Boulevard, Suite 416, South Bend, Indiana, who is coordinating the City's effort <br />in the 2000 census. <br />Mr. Magliozzi updated the Council on the progress of the census and indicated that there is still time <br />for individuals to complete and mail in their forms. He noted that the census enumerators are out <br />in the neighborhoods at this time. <br />A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. <br />There was no one present wishing to speak to the Council either in favor of or in opposition to this <br />Resolution. <br />In response to questions from Councilmembers Coleman and Kelly, Mr. Magliozzi noted that the <br />City will lose three thousand three hundred ninety one dollars ($3,391.00) per uncounted individual <br />of missed funds from all sources. Mr. Magliozzi noted that initially there were not enough <br />
