SECTION 3 – STORMWATER <br />33 <br />3-3.3 (c) (ii) REMOVAL OF SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS: <br />Removal of surface improvements shall be made with neat saw cut lines. Debris shall be properly <br />disposed of by the Contractor. Removal of surface improvements shall comply with INDOT <br />Standard Specifications Section 202. <br />3-3.3 (c) (iii) REMOVAL AND ABANDONMENT OF EXISTING CONDUITS AND STRUCTURES: <br />Prior to removing or abandoning existing conduits or structures, verify with the utility that they are <br />inactive. Conduits or structures removed shall be properly disposed of by the Contractor. Salvage <br />any useable components to its proper owner. When existing conduits are removed the remaining <br />conduit ends shall be cut smooth and plugged water tight. If a conduit or structure is abandoned in <br />place, it shall be filled with non-removable flowable fill. Tops of structures abandoned in place <br />shall be removed below the subgrade elevation. <br />3-3.3 (c) (iv) MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM PIPE ZONE TRENCH WIDTH <br />The minimum pipe trench zone shall be as shown in Standard Drawing 3-10. The maximum trench <br />width shall be such that adjacent structures, landscaping, utilities, or workers safety are not <br />compromised. <br />3-3.3 (c) (v) MAXIMUM LENGTH OF OPEN TRENCH <br />The maximum length of open trench while work activities are occurring shall be sixty (60) feet. At <br />the end of each work day or when work activities are not progressing, trench excavation shall be <br />backfilled to the subgrade elevation. The work site shall be protected with orange plastic/vinyl <br />construction fencing, barricades, or temporary fencing. <br />3-3.3 (d) DEWATERING <br />Water shall not be discharged into the City’s sewer system without an approved discharge permit, <br />in adherence to the City’s Stormwater Ordinance. <br />Water shall be kept out of the trench until pipe joining or structure installation is completed. When <br />work is not in progress, open pipe ends, fittings, and valves shall be securely closed so that no <br />trench water, earth, or other substance will enter the pipes or fittings. <br />Dewatering shall be performed such that dry working conditions are maintained for all the <br />excavated trenches and excavations for structures. <br />The Dewatering System shall be installed in a manner so it does not interfere with traffic <br />maintenance. <br />Diesel dewatering equipment, including generators, may be used. Any diesel equipment utilized <br />must be sound attenuated. The equipment noise level shall comply with Article 7 – Noise Control, <br />of the City of South Bend Code of Ordinances. A spill containment system (minimum size equal <br />to the fuel tank volume) shall be provided and placed.
