ii. If necessary, the involved-agency supervisor may administratively order <br /> any involved-agency officer(s)to immediately provide public safety <br /> information necessary to secure the scene, identify injured parties,and <br /> pursue suspects. <br /> 1. Public safety information shall be limited to such things as <br /> outstanding suspect information,number and direction of any shots <br /> fired,perimeter of the incident scene, identity of known or <br /> potential witnesses, and any other pertinent information. <br /> 2. The initial on-scene supervisor should not attempt to order any <br /> involved officer to provide any information other than public <br /> safety information. <br /> iii. Provide all available information to the respective-agency Shift Supervisor <br /> and Communication Center. If feasible, sensitive information should be <br /> communicated over secure networks. <br /> iv. Take command of and secure the incident scene with additional members <br /> until properly relieved. <br /> v. As soon as practicable, ensure that involved officers are transported <br /> (separately,if feasible)to a suitable location for further direction. <br /> vi. Each involved officer should be given an administrative order not to <br /> discuss the incident with other involved officers or department members <br /> pending further direction from their supervisor. <br /> vii. Witness Identification and Interviews-Because potential witnesses to an <br /> officer-involved shooting or death may become unavailable or the <br /> integrity of their statements compromised with the passage of time, a <br /> supervisor should take reasonable steps to promptly coordinate with joint <br /> criminal investigation team to utilize available law enforcement personnel <br /> for the following: <br /> 1. Identification of all persons present at the scene and in the <br /> immediate area. <br /> 2. Witnesses who are willing to provide a formal interview should be <br /> asked to meet or be transported to where investigators may obtain <br /> a recorded statement. Such witnesses, if willing, may be <br /> transported by any officer(except those who are directly involved). <br /> c. DEPARTMENT/SHIFT SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES-Upon <br /> learning of an officer-involved shooting or death,the Department Shift Supervisor <br /> shall be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the incident until they are <br /> relieved by lead agency. <br /> d. INQUIRIES OF INCIDENT-All outside inquiries about the incident shall be <br /> directed to the commander or authorized designee of the assigned joint criminal <br /> investigation team. <br /> 4. NOTIFICATIONS-The following persons shall be notified as soon as practicable: <br /> • Chief of Police/Sheriff• Division Chief(s) • Office of Professional <br /> Standards/Internal Affairs (IA) • Critical Incident Stress Management(CISM)Team <br /> • Chaplain• Coroner(if necessary) • Involved officer's agency representative(if <br /> requested) • Public Information Officer• St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office <br /> Page 3 of 7 <br />
