<br />Medical Facilities
<br />There are three general acute care hospitals in the City, the- two largest of which are
<br />located in the downtown area. Memorial Hospital of South Bend has 526 beds; St.
<br />Joseph Medical Center has 411 beds; Michiana Community Hospital (formerly South
<br />Bend Osteopathic Hospital) has 107 beds. The hospitals offer a wide variety of medical
<br />specialities and have the entire Michiana Region as their primary service area. There
<br />are 13 nursing homes in the South Bend/Mishawaka area. Other special health facilities
<br />include Healthwin Hospital, four urgent care centers, and Northern Indiana State
<br />Hospital and Medical Foundation.
<br />Transportation
<br />In addition to its location near Interstate Highway I-90, U.S. Highways 20, 31 and 33 go
<br />.through the City, as do State Highways 2, 23, 123 and. 331. Six rail lines and nearly 50
<br />trucking lines serve the City and surrounding area. Four bus companies provide inter-
<br />city transport in the area, while Transpo, the municipal bus line, provides service within
<br />the area. Chicago's O'Hare Airport is approximately 100 miles from the City. Regional
<br />airports in South Bend and Elkhart provide chartered and commuter services.
