JONES <br />CITY CLERK, SOUTH BEND, IN <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, CALLING FOR COMMON SENSE GUN <br />REFORM IN FEDERAL AND STATE JURISDICTIONS <br />WHEREAS, one definition of "mass shooting" is a shooting in which four or more <br />people are shot in the same place; and <br />WHEREAS, as of 12:00 p.m. EST on June 7, 2022, there have been at least 246 mass <br />shootings in the United States this year, including twenty-seven mass school shootings; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2021, there were 692 mass shootings: and <br />WHEREAS, these numbers represent more than one mass shooting each and every day; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, between Friday evening, June 3, 2022, and Sunday evening June 5, 2022, <br />there were at least thirteen mass shootings in the United States leaving more than a dozen dead <br />and seventy wounded; and <br />WHEREAS, overall gun violence has killed at least 18,823 people in the United States <br />this year; and <br />WHEREAS, gun violence does not discriminate, it affects all races, colors, religions, <br />creeds, sexual orientations and socioeconomic classes, the only common factor of the victims is <br />death and injury; and <br />WHEREAS, the statistics well known, they are similar to the statistics from 2021, and <br />2022; and <br />WHEREAS, polls show that an overwhelming number of Americans are in favor of <br />common-sense gun control measures; and <br />WHEREAS, federal and state legislators continue to fail to pass any meaningful gun <br />reform measures and, in some cases, have actually made access to guns, including assault style <br />weapons, easier; and <br />WHEREAS, among the proposals being considered at the federal level is the <br />strengthening of background checks, including such checks at gun shows and for online sales, <br />enactment of storage and red flag laws and the repeal of the immunity that protect gun <br />manufacturers from liability; and <br />
