O Lmmntfl P itrport <br /> • <br /> HUMAN RESOURCES AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT <br /> QJn tit Mumma Moonlit of tip (Entg of Bong #trnd: <br /> The January 26, 1987, meeting of the Human Resources and Economic <br /> Development - Committee was called to order by its Chairman, Councilman <br /> Eugenia Braboy, at 4:40 p.m. in the Council informal meeting room. <br /> Persons in attendance included Councilmen: Serge, Braboy, Beck, Voorde, <br /> Paszek, Zakrzewski, and Taylor; Ann Kolata, Ernest J. Szarwark, Hedi <br /> Robinson, Tracy Jacobs, Mr. Jackson, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand. <br /> Councilman Braboy noted that the purpose of the meeting was to review three <br /> (3) resolutions seeking tax abatement. <br /> Councilman Taylor noted that since he had another commitment, he would have <br /> to leave the meeting; however, he spoke in favor of granting all three (3) <br /> requests for tax abatement since it was his understanding that they all met <br /> the legal requirements. <br /> The Committee then turned its attention to reviewing Resolution 87-2 which <br /> would seek real property tax abatement for a three (3) year period for the <br /> property located at 2920 Sample Street and Resolution 87-3 which would seek <br /> personal property tax abatement for a period of five (5) years at 2920 <br /> Sample Street. Hedi Robinson from the Department of Redevelopment then gave <br /> the report. <br /> Mr. Eric Peterson, the Chairman of Peterson Printing, noted that currently <br /> they have operations at 746 South Arnold and that, with the expansion, six <br /> (6) new jobs would be created, seventy-seven (77) full-time jobs would be <br /> maintained, and eleven (11) part-time jobs would also be maintained. He <br /> further noted that there are currently two (2) labor unions in the companies <br /> with the average hourly rate for journeymen ranging from $14.70 to - $17.00 <br /> per hour. In response to questions from the Mayor's Minority Affairs <br /> . Council, Mr. Peterson stated that he would be willing to work with them in <br /> the area of minority affairs job opportunities. <br /> It was noted by the Council Attorney that Resolution 87-2 was an amended <br /> version. Following discussion by the Committee members, Councilman Puzzello <br /> made a motion, seconded by Councilman Serge, that the amended version of <br /> Resolution 87-2 go to Council favorably. The motion passed. Councilman <br /> Puzzello then made a motion, seconded by Councilman Serge, that Resolution <br /> 87-3 go to Council favorably. The motion passsed. <br /> Mr. Ernest Szarwark, an attorney with Barnes and Thornburg, then presented <br /> Resolution 87-4 which would seek real property tax abatement for a period of <br /> six (6) years for the property located at 213 West Washington Street. He <br /> noted that currently the property is owned by Valley Realty Trust. The <br /> project would totally remodel the old Americana Hotel and become a new <br /> Holiday Inn in the downtown area. He noted that one hundred fifty (150) new <br /> jobs would be created. <br /> Councilman Braboy voiced concern over the laid-off employees, and Mr. <br /> Szarwark informed her that those employees would be contacted by the new <br /> owner.
