Safe Routes to School | 6
Project Area
The project area stretches approximately 1.5 miles between Olive Street
and Franklin Street and 0.5 miles from Ewing Avenue to Indiana Avenue,
and within that area are numerous local streets. In total, this area could
potentially have approximately 600 curb ramps and nearly 22 miles of
sidewalk. Furthermore, based on our site visit, its estimated that over 30%
of the existing sidewalk and curb ramps are in disrepair or missing entirely.
With the funding available, its not feasible to repair all the sidewalk in
this area, which is why identifying the priority areas of improvement and
maximizing the budget will be an essential part of this project. These
project often also require limited curb replacement and asphalt patching
to properly bring the curb ramps up to ADA standards. It is also important
to coordinate with any future City projects within the project limits to help
maximize the improvement footprint for the City.
Drainage
One of the important aspects of any pedestrian improvements is drainage.
The areas in front of the curb ramps need to be well drained and not
present ponding water hazards after rain events. The intent would be to
perpetuate existing drainage patterns as much as possible, while also
designing the sidewalks and curb ramps to be free of ponding water.
11 22 33 44
PROJECT AREA W.
