Safe Routes to School | 11 <br />Northview Safe Routes to <br />School <br />Valparaiso, Indiana <br />DLZ provided professional consulting <br />design services for a sidewalk project in the <br />Northview area of the City of Valparaiso. <br />The project included the design of sidewalk <br />gaps to the pedestrian facilities that had <br />challenging issues. Locations included a <br />mixture of curb and gutter or shoulder. <br />In many cases, gravel parking areas had <br />been created at the edge of the roadway, <br />prohibiting walking. The City coordinated <br />directly with property owners to provide <br />sidewalk in those areas. In other situations, <br />the carriage walk slopes from the homes to <br />the roadway, not within City right-of-way, <br />did not align with the sidewalk. DLZ was able <br />to design creative solutions that provided <br />the necessary profile grades. Ponding water <br />and limited right-of-way in many areas <br />were also challenges where the DLZ team <br />provided innovative solutions that kept the <br />construction limits at a minimum. DLZ staff <br />conducted additional field checks than is <br />customary to be certain these solutions would <br />be acceptable during construction. <br />Tamarack Multi-use Trail <br />North Liberty, Indiana <br />DLZ was retained by the Town of North Liberty <br />to provide design services for a multi-use trail <br />along the abandoned railroad from Wabash <br />Avenue to the north side of the VFW park. <br />Work included the installation of ADA compliant <br />infrastructure with the path being 10 feet <br />wide and hard-surfaced HMA pavement. The <br />approximate length of the trail was 4,600 feet <br />and connected the North Liberty Community <br />Center to the North Liberty Youth League <br />Ballpark along the abandoned railroad corridor <br />(formerly Indiana, Illinois and Iowa Railroad), <br />through approximately 2,200 feet of cleared <br />woods. The trail was designed in accordance <br />with the Indiana Department of Transportation <br />Standard Specifications. <br />Other elements of the project included <br />performing topographic survey, environmental <br />services, right of way engineering and <br />acquisition services, geotechnical investigation, <br />and construction phase office services. <br />Safe Routes to School <br />Project along Fox Road <br />Lawrence, Indiana <br />DLZ was retained by City of Lawrence to <br />prepare the design plans for a Safe Routes <br />to School Project along Fox Road in City of <br />Lawrence, Marion County, Indiana. Project will <br />construct sidewalk, boardwalks, curb ramps and <br />crosswalks along south side of Fox Road from <br />Pennycroft Drive to Amy Beverland Elementary <br />School. The typical section for the concrete <br />sidewalks will be 5 feet in width with 5 feet of <br />buffer. In some restricted areas, the typical <br />sidewalk will be 6 feet in width constructed at <br />the back of new curb and gutter. In large the <br />fill area and across Dry Branch Creek, six-foot- <br />wide elevated boardwalks will be constructed <br />with railings. The Total length of boardwalk <br />will be approximately 1,100. All other locations <br />will be concrete sidewalks. Utilizing the <br />boardwalk construction will reduce impacts to <br />wetland areas and reduce right-of-way. The <br />typical section for the concrete sidewalks and <br />boardwalks will be constructed with a designed <br />cross slope of 1.5%. Proposed improvements <br />include sidewalk construction, boardwalk <br />construction, ramps and drive approach <br />reconstruction conforming to the Americans <br />with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
