Councilmen Taylor and Crone requested the Administration to
rank these items by priorities. The Mayor stated that all of the
requested items are needed, however, that perhaps the radio equipment
and portable radio units could be delayed.
Fire Department
$868 , 600 is the proposed total in the bond issue, with $582,600
for 1981, and $286, 000 for 1982.
Fire Chief Brassell reviewed the proposed items. Councilman
Voorde questioned the Motor Equipment item.. Chief Brassell stated that
two pumpers and one ladder truck would be purchased out of the 1981
allocation, One pumper would go to the Cleveland Road fire station,
and the second pumper would go to the sample Street fire station. The
second pumper would have a foam capability for the proposed
Ethanol Plant. He stated that a 14 month lead time is necessary in
purchasing such equipment.
Councilman Szymkowiak again requested that a pumper be placed
in Fire Station No. 4. He stated that the station was built to
house two vehicles, and that it should be treated as a Fire Station
and not a garage,
The $137 , 000 proposed for rehabilitation and miscellaneous
equipment in 1981 was originally proposed at $71,000. The $66 ,000 in 1982
would be for a new roof on Fire Station No. 8, Councilman Beck
questioned whether the new fire station could be equiped to handle women
firefighters, and was told that it could. Councilman Beck emphasized
the need for a roof and other rehabilitation at the Riverpark Fire
Station.
Councilman McGann stated that if equipment from Fire Station
No. 3 is sent, that there is a no close back-up facility, He sees
this as a "lack of fire protection" , and would like this problem
addressed. Mayor Parent stated that he had not considered it for the
bond issue, but would give it further thought.
Councilman McGann also stated that he sees need to adjust the
present ambulance fees, He stated that the fees are at a 1973 level,
and suggested setting up a fund solely for fire department equipment
for such fees collected,
Councilman McGann requested the Administration's priorities.
Chief Brassell stated that all items as proposed are needed just
to maintain the status quo,
Jon Hunt reminded the Committee that the last two fire
stations were built with federal funds, and that the last fire truck
was also purchased with federal funds,
-2-
