Health Effects: <br />Increased heart and <br />respiratory rates <br />— Elevated blood pressure <br />— Sweating <br />— Headaches <br />Workplace Issues <br />— Blurred vision <br />— Dizziness <br />— Sleeplessness and anxiety <br />— Poor coordination <br />— Physical collapse <br />— Since the drug alleviates the sensation of fatigue, it may be abused to increase <br />alertness during periods of overtime or failure to get rest. <br />— With heavy use or increasing fatigue, the short-term mental or physical <br />enhancement reverses and becomes impairment. <br />FACT., Frequent users become dependent on using amphetamines and <br />methamphetamines to avoid the "down" mood that they experience when the <br />high wears off. They can be detected in a user's body for about two to three days <br />after use. <br />Opiates <br />Opiates are pain relievers that cause drowsiness and respiratory depression along with <br />euphoria. Common opiates are opium, morphine, codeine, synthetic narcotics (Vicodin, <br />Darvon, Demerol and methadone), and heroin. Most medical problems associated with <br />opiates are caused by the uncertain dosage levels, use of non-sterile needles, <br />contamination of the drug, and or the combination of a narcotic with other drugs. <br />Common street names are: smack, junk, dope, brown sugar, morpho, and coties. Many <br />abusers are also taking prescription drugs containing codeine or morphine. <br />Signs and Symptoms of Abuse: Initially produces a feeling of euphoria that is <br />followed by: <br />— Drowsiness <br />— Nausea and vomiting <br />Constricted pupils <br />— Watery eyes and itching <br />— Low and shallow breathing <br />Clammy skin <br />— Impaired respiration <br />— Convulsions <br />— Coma <br />— Death <br />5 <br />Health Effects: <br />Tolerance develops rapidly <br />— Addiction <br />HIV/AIDS/Hepatitis <br />— Premature, stillborn or <br />addicted infants <br />
