LaSalle South Bend, IN 46601 Proposal: A. The owner proposes to change the sign design approved at the Historic Preservation Commission December, 1987 meeting to one of the two designs submitted for Greta's Consignments. B. The owner also requests a variance for a second sign to be located in the parking lot near LaSalle and Lafayette Streets to identify the parking lot and the owner's two businesses in that block. Standards: Only one appropriate identifying sign will be permitted per business. Recommendation: A. The new designs are more appropriate to the historic shape of the original Candy Store sign and to the scale of the building. Staff recommends approval. B. The owner requests a sign in this location at the far corner of the lot to help identify the parking lot and the two businesses she operates that are 150' from the corner. The overall shape of the sign alludes to the gable end pattern of the Candy Store and the design repeats the use of fish scale shingles, porch spindle and lattice details found on the store. The sign appears to be approximately 6.5 feet from grade to the top, and is of a relatively large size for the building. If it were located next to the building it would tend to dwarf it and thus be inappropriate in size. Staff can give a favorable recommendation for this sign if it is clearly stated that while the sign size is inappropriate, it is acceptable in this case because "it is located far enough away from the building so as not to cause a negative visual impact on the historic building."
