The Historic Preservation Commission is essentially in <br />agreement with the concepts of the rehabilitation of <br />Central High School for the school's administrative <br />offices. At it's July 18, 1988 meeting, the HPC <br />approved the first five items, and approved the concept <br />of a sixth item, relative to the rehabilitation of the <br />High School building itself, and only tabled the <br />decision on the demolition of the Vo-Tec and powerplant <br />buildings request pending receipt of additional <br />information. At a meeting requested by the HPC with <br />the South Bend School Corporation and its architects on <br />August 2, 1988, informational requirements for the next <br />HPC meeting were discussed in detail to facilitate the <br />completion of the information gathering process so that <br />a decision could be made at the next HPC meeting <br />scheduled for August 15. <br />The Historic Preservation Commission has to make a <br />careful consideration of the facts and alternatives <br />before a determination can be made that a variance to <br />allow the demoliton of two local landmarks and National <br />Register properties is t,,iarranted. General un-informed <br />sentiments that consider these structures ",junk -piles", <br />"useless monstrosities" and "claptrap" do not <br />substitute for federal and local review procedures. <br />Personal attacks, prejudices and threats likewise do <br />not facilitate a. forum for rational decision- making <br />and problem -solving.
