Milton <br />South Lend, IN 46613 <br />Proposal : <br />Local landmark status is being requested for the Emmaus Evangelical <br />Lutheran Church. The building is rated an S!11 on the Indiana Historic <br />Site and Structures 'Inventor•,.. (The rating was raised from C/10 by the HPC <br />at the March 1988 meeting.) It is designed in the Gothic Revival style. <br />Standards.: <br />A landmark must be rated at least an Sill on the Indiana Historic Site=. and <br />Structure•_. Inventory and must be evaluated according to the following <br />criteria: <br />a. Its character, interest, or value as part of the development, <br />heri tame, or culture of the City of South Lend, St. Joseph County, <br />the State of Indiana, or the United States of America; <br />b. its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detai 1 , <br />materials, or craftsmanship which represents an architectural <br />characteristic_ or innovation; <br />C. it=_. educational value; <br />d. its sui tabi 1 i ty for preservation; <br />e . its location as the site of a significant historical event; and/or <br />f . its identification with the 1 i fe of a. person or persons of <br />historical significance. <br />Evaluation: <br />The subject building is rated Sf`11 on the Indiana Historic Sites and <br />Structures. Inventory. <br />Criterion a: The church k-oas constructed in 1938 by Hal 1 et Meyers of <br />Elkhart from a desion by J. Adam Fichter. It is located in the South <br />side neighborhoods once populated by employees of the Studebaker <br />Corporation. F i ch ter i.%i.a.s a. t.1ie 1 1 -known arch i tec t from Akron , Oh i o and <br />a-.la.s knovin for his church architecture designs. <br />Criterion b: The building has exhibits many distinguishing features of the <br />Gothic Revival Style including pointed arch vi i ndovis, steeply pitched <br />gable roofs, and buttresses. The building has retained its <br />architectural integrity. <br />
