City of South Bend | Coal Line Trail (Phase I) | Construction Engineering Services | 8 <br />Challenge <br />It is anticipated the project will be <br />constructed predominantly at grade. <br />However, a grade separation will be <br />constructed to align the proposed trail <br />with Portage Avenue. In order to achieve <br />this, a separate path will be constructed <br />off of the main trail, and cuts and fills will <br />be needed. The existing subgrade material <br />can cause an issue in obtaining the <br />required subgrade bearing capacity. <br />Solution <br />Careful inspection of the subgrade <br />during construction will identify the areas <br />exhibiting soft or yielding soil. Ensuring <br />that proper benching is performed <br />when constructing the fills may also be <br />necessary.
