Coal Line Trail | Page 5
RELEVANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Westenedge Drive is a collector street passing through a residential neighborhood in
Columbus, Indiana and is also a major vehicular and pedestrian route to elementary, middle
and high schools. Despite the high traffic volume in the area, the street did not have a storm
drainage system.
The Burke team designed transportation improvements including a new multi-use path
on the east side as part of the city’s People Trail system and a sidewalk on the west side.
A new chicane designed for the intersection at Laurel Drive serves as a traffic calming
measure. The drainage design was especially challenging as the city requested it stay within
the current right-of-way. There was very little grade change, no nearby storm sewers, and
no receiving waters with adequate capacity to accept additional runoff. Burke engineers
designed the project with a PaveDrain gutter above an infiltration system, taking advantage
of the granular soils in the project area.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Extensive public involvement
phase which included
neighborhood meetings
• Challenging drainage design
to stay within current right-of-
way
• Main route to multiple schools
meant increased pedestrian
traffic
• Proposed improvements
includng curb, pave drain
gutter, drainage swales,
sidewalk, multi-use path, and a
chicane for traffic calming
• PaveDrain gutter above an
infiltration system to collect
runoff and improve water
quality
CLIENT
City of Columbus
Dave Hayward
812.376.2540
TIME PERIOD
2006 - 2013
2016 - 2019
CONSTR.
