South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -July 21, 2000
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
b. continued...
think it is certainly very appropriate for cities to
invest in facilities like Century Center,
Coveleski, College Football Hall of Fame,
Studebaker Museum. Those add to the quality of
life in this community; they add to a sense of
who we are, where we are. They are important
only for local citizens, but also for job attraction
to this community. I certainly further dispute
calling investing in the juvenile justice center, the
jail and Riley High School inappropriate, unless
I'm mis- reading you (Ms. Boaler) on that. Those
are needed investments in the community as
well. I believe that we have seen many positives
from the Hall of Fame. Is it a failure in terms of
a break -even business? Yes, it is a failure in
terms of a break -even business! Is it a failure in
terms of the community? I do not believe so! I
believe that it will continue to grow and be a
mark of pride for the City of South Bend. I
believe it has spurred additional investment in
the downtown area for the Leighton Center to the
Chocolate Cafe. It has been part of a package,
including the Morris Performing Arts Center,
that might be another, Joyce, that you want to
add to your list in terms of investments. I think
that it has really been part of what we are seeing
as a strong rejuvenation of the downtown and as
a city, we have public benefit and continue to try
to attract private investment to follow -up on that,
to make this a better community. So, thank you
for your consideration.
Mr. Hunt asked if there were any further
comments from the Commissioners. There were
none. Mr. Hunt noted that the Commission has a
fiscal responsibility to the City of South Bend to
protect their good standing in the credit market.
-12-
