South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - December 19, 1997
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
r. continued....
today and I would just like to stress to you
the need we have to acquire this property.
It goes back to the commitment that the
City has joined with us and over two years
ago, in the site selection of this property,
the time table for this project and also the
cost of this project. It is very clear to see,
I believe, that our present building being
on this parcel right here ... (he referred to
the site plan of the Studebaker
Museum) ... we cannot begin construction
until we have this acquired to have some
auxiliary parking for the new building to
be constructed in this area. Traffic
flowing one way South on Main Street.
We'll be deleting egress into the Museum.
The new egress will be off of South ... the
entrance will be off of South and Lafayette
Streets. This parking area, which is very
much part of the project, will support the
bus parking, RV parking, trailer parking,
etc., when we have special events. And
also the development of the science park
area, the children's space, our handicapped
area and off - loading of children in this
area for this special event area is very
critical, not -to- mention the appearance of
the block in general. If this were not here,
you could very easily see what we would
end up with and this has always been part
of the property acquisition. The existing
Bell Appliance building would be used, as
was mentioned, for storage and remedial
repair of some of the vehicles and
carriages that are in the collection. And
then lastly and most importantly, this area
F:\ HOME\CPHIPPS \WPDATA \COMMSN\121997.MIN -45-
