As I mentioned on the phone, I was joined by
HPC's Preservation Specialist Steve Szaday and Indiana Landmarks' Todd Zeiger in a site visit today where we discussed
and measured the window enclosures.
Here are my concerns:
1) The proposed application calls for four 'new' windows on the south side to replace the 'existing' vinyl windows
("'Install 4104 '2" by 615/8" INU316TmpLow E -Insulated tempered glass 1" panes on the South side from The
Glass Doctors as recommended by HPC and Indiana Landmarks."). Each enclosure, from transition piece to
transition piece (inside the supporting and decorative pillars) measured more than 110". For the purposes of my
report, there are some concerns regarding the overall dimensions of these windows and the "remainder" space
between the new windows and the supporting pillars. Updated and amended dimensions for all four of these
would be beneficial.
2) The proposed application calls for four 'new' windows on the east side ("Install4 58 5/8'x 61 %" INU316Lowe-
Insulated Units Low E 1" Glass Panes on the east side."). These enclosures, from transition piece to transition
piece (inside the supporting and decorative pillars) measured more than 65". Updated and amended
dimensions for all four of these would be beneficial.
3) Beside the man -door on the Southwest wall there is a single window. The application as received referenced its
removal with the others ("Removal of a total of 21 windows vinyl windows."). As a break -down: twelve windows
are on the south side, eight are on the southeast side, leaving a single on the southwest side. What are your
intentions for this opening?
Dave, from The Glass Doctor, expressed his optimism that this could be resolved, and looked forward to supplying the
expected glass in any dimensions.
Once again, thank you for being so open to address these concerns in a timely manner for the sake of our Commission
meeting next Monday. We expect to send out our Staff Reports to the Commission tomorrow at end -of -day.
I have CC'd the following people on this exchange: Elicia Feasel, Executive Director and Steve Szaday, Preservation
Specialist — both of the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County — and Todd Zeiger,
Director, Northern Office (Indiana Landmarks).
Adam Toering
Deputy Director
Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County
125 S.
