5/1/2017
XFINITYConnect BittersweetTrail Printout
Historically speaking, linseed oil was a main component in point and glazing putty with good reason. It bonds
to most substrates as it cures. It has great elasticity to contend with the expansion and contraction of
materials. Cured linseed is an organic polymer. It's reasonably water repellent/proof yet retains vapor
permeability (that's highly desireable to resist failure over time.
Traditional glazing putty is the perfect medium to fix glass to wood (or metal). The recipe is simple enough
too, just a blend of whiting (calcium carbonate or chalk) and raw with boiled linseed oil. Once applied it has a
durable life expectancy of 30+ years.
Swedish company "Allback" is my go to for the best linseed oil products. I highly recommend Allback glazing
putty for adherence to traditional recipe, quality of ingredients, storage life, versatility of application and
immediate paintability.
Sarco Glazing Putty is my second tier recommendation. I try to avoid anything else from the box store (Le.
DAP).
As I mentioned before, Allback Paint is OUTSTANDING stuff. 1 highly endorse it for exterior use. Works very
well for interior use as well, but since longer cure time might be a drawback indoors and weatherability is not
a big issue indoors either, you can survive with a good conventional paint in the living space. Although VOCs
do NOT exist in Allback paint products so it might be worth considering for that reason alone. Allback does
have a line of interior linseed paint products, I just have no experience with those.
Allback linseed paint can immediately top coat Allback glazing putty. That's a two week project time savings(
Always order Allback Zinc Oxide/Linseed Mix when you order the paint. Add to the paint at 10-75% to
improve paint hardness and long term resistance to mold and mildew especially in damp environments (the
north side of your house). As an additive, it is a minor paint extender (like chicory in coffee).
I use Allback Linseed Soap. Originally bought it for cleaning my paint brushes and hands (to remove wet
paint). But I soon discovered how well this soap works as an effective all around cleaner and degreaser. Now I
use that soap for everything.
Full disclosure: I am not a paid spokesperson for any of the products I've mentioned. I have never received
products from these manufacturers for free. I carefully select materials based on capability and ease of use.
Everything I've mentioned has proven to be more than cost effective and compatible with all material surfaces
and epoxies (Abatron and 3M) encountered in the course of preservation work.
Regarding the former barn, we will be petitioning the Building Department to take up the issue with the
previous owner, as they are the responsible party.
Finally, Elicia sends Chris Huffs email: chrishuff20aol.com.
Thanks so much for working with us in all these matters. We look forward to seeing your landscaping plans
for dumpster and egress window, and would be glad to answer any questions/concerns you have.
Best,
Deb Parcell, deputy director
P.S. We will be out of the office for State Preservation Conference April 25-28.
httpsJlconnectxfinity.com/appsuitety=7.8.3-16.20170411.173720/print.html?print 1493645700440 2/3
