Lafayette Blvd., South Bend <br />Days/Hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening and weekend hours for <br />meetings or special events. This position full time, exempt, and is covered under the Saint Joseph County <br />Employee Policy Manual. <br />DESCRIPTION <br />The Deputy Director is the public face and day-to-day assistant manager of the Historic Preservation <br />Commission of South Bend and Saint Joseph County — a dual governmental agency responsible for the <br />preservation of historic buildings, sites, and structures in Saint Joseph County, Indiana. The Deputy Director is <br />responsible for assisting with the activities of the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) office, including <br />technical services, architectural and historic reviews, Certificates of Appropriateness (COA), personnel, and with <br />directing and managing in the absence of the Executive Director. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS <br />Preservation Efforts <br />►► Prepares documentation required for County/City work, including: homeowner relations and <br />education of Standards and Guidelines, Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) process, <br />National Register nominations, and grant application and administration. <br />►► Provide technical assistance to owners of historic properties in Saint Joseph County including <br />government officials, community organizations, and private property owners along with other <br />groups and individuals interested in preserving historic structures (this includes providing <br />restoration recommendations, designating new properties as local landmarks or local historic <br />districts, helping to list properties on the National Register of Historic Places, helping to evaluate <br />the scope of restoration projects, providing research assistance and guidance, etc.). <br />►► Plans, directs, and supervises work projects for assigned staff, contractor, or intern. <br />Prioritizes and delegates assignments, establishes work goals, motivates staff, provides <br />training, interprets policies and procedures, ensures proper completion of tasks and <br />conformance with policy, recommends corrective action when necessary to the Executive <br />Director. <br />►► Identify endangered structures within Saint Joseph County (by conducting Section 106 reviews of <br />federally funded projects); determine the significance of the structures and what strategies, if any, <br />the organization should undertake to preserve them; design and implement action plans to save <br />them. <br />►► Supports Executive Director as a liaison between the HPC, County, and City departments <br />maintaining interdepartmental relationships, rapport, and communication. <br />►► Supports Executive Director in communication with law enforcement, City and County <br />Council members, State and National Preservation Organizations. <br />Equal Opportunity Employer <br />
