U4 00
May 27, 2016 2
SBN Historic Preservation Commission `
City Government Office, 125 S Lafayette Blvd
South Bend, IN 46601 J
Dear Commission Director Elicia Feasel and Commissioners, V v °
Enclosed is the check for the application fee of $20.00, to accompany the
Certificate of Appropriateness and supporting documentation for the
requested tear -down of the 110 -year-old carriage house at 838 Park Avenue,
South Bend, IN 46616. Please let us know when to send the additional $20.00.
All photos, contracts, and supporting documentation will be emailed to the
commission by next Tuesday May 31, since Monday May 30 is Memorial Day.
Originally we wanted to rebuild the 110 -year-old carriage house, but every single
licensed, bonded, insured contractor, whom we contacted, said that the carriage
house (1) is completely unstable, (2) has 3 of its 4 block/brick walls crumbling and
bowed, (3) has completely rotted wooden roof structure and substructure, and
(4) has caved in, sagging roof. They all said carriage house has "nothing to work
with" and should be torn down. They all said they are afraid to have men working
near/in it, as it is so unstable, including 3 unstable brick/stone walls of 4 walls.
Steve, the Historical Commission field director, to whom I spoke, also said he had
inspected the carriage house. He said that it is unstable and likely unsafe.
Thank you for your consideration, J
 f WV&
Maurice and Kristin Shrader-Frechette
838 Park Avenue, South Bend, IN 46616
PS: We are teachers, and thus out of town for the summer, babysitting our
grandchildren in California.
