STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />mate: 05 July 2016 <br />Application Number: 2016-0705 <br />Property Location: 129 West North Shore Drive <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: Neo-Classical/1905 <br />Property Owner: Mary Ellen O'Connell & Pete Bauer <br />Landmark or District Designation: West North Shore LHD <br />Rating: Notable <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: This 2 story plus attic Neo -Classical house sits upon a brick <br />foundation. The plan is square plus additions. Roof is gable ended with twin dormers on long fagade with asphalt <br />shingles. Walls are aluminum sided. There is a two-story front entry porch, triple corner columns with ionic capitals <br />supporting a simple pediment with dentil frieze. Windows are 35/1 wood double -hung throughout with trim <br />concealed by siding. Front door is louvered, there are twin sidelights with paneled spandrel. <br />ALTERATIONS: Siding and front door are not original. Owners have made many improvements to restore <br />original details. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: 1. Remove aluminum siding & restore original wood siding; 2. Replace front door <br />with historically correct replica; 3. Refurbish windows, columns. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: 1. Millwood Roofing will remove non -original aluminum siding <br />and restore original wood siding; condition of wood siding is unknown at this time but owners have provided a <br />vintage photo of the house showing the original wood siding. 2. The new front door will be custom constructed of <br />wood with glass and a panel below, resembling the doors of nearby houses, examples provided. The new wood <br />door will utilize the hardware from the current louvered door. 3. Refurbishing original windows and columns is in- <br />kind, routine maintenance. <br />PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT: n/a <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />WEST NORTH SHORE <br />BASIC STRUCTURAL MATERIAL AND ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES <br />Preferred <br />Retain and maintain the original exterior building material. Frame Structures: Repair, repaint, and/or clean siding to <br />deter deterioration. Masonry Structures: Tuckpoint brick and stone, 'repair stucco and repaint trim, stucco and brick <br />(if painted) to deter deterioration. Retain and maintain architectural detail of structures such as wrought iron, tile, <br />brackets, etc., or replace when necessary with similar material in texture, size and appearance. <br />Permitted <br />If vinyl or aluminum siding is the only economic solution to a deteriorating frame house, architectural detail must <br />be visually preserved. The siding used should match the original in style, width, and lap as closely as possible. <br />Prohibited <br />Do not use asbestos or asphalt siding on frame structures. Do not use artificial brick or cast stone siding on brick, <br />masonry, stucco, or frame structures. Do not sandblast or use harsh deter gents in cleaning brick, masonry or <br />stucco. <br />STRUCTURES <br />B. WINDOWS AND DOORS <br />Preferred <br />Retain and maintain existing window and doors including sash, lintels, sills, shutters, doors, decorative glass, <br />pediments, hoods, and hardware. Use canvas awnings, if awnings are used. Install wooden frame storm windows <br />and doors painted to match trim. Install insulating glass in existing sash. As to Lot 12, metal storm windows <br />and doors which have been coated to match trim and which are architecturally in good taste with the <br />structure, are preferred. <br />
