Abbreviated Field Audit Architectural Summary
Ambassadors for Christ Church
January 24, 2008
in New York and the faceted jewels originated in Paris. It is believed that the cross may
have been designed by Tiffany & Co. however this has not been verified.
The Sanctuary Annex is approximately 10'x 16', is located directly to the south of the
main Sanctuary, and has one large double window of stained glass on the south wall. The
Annex connects to a 15' x 15' room to the east, and the former Infant Classroom and Hall
to the west. The Annex looks out upon the Sanctuary to the north and there are curtains
and a railing at this location to divide the spaces. There are three large stained glass
windows in the room to the east -- two on the east wall and one on the south wall.
The Basement contains a Dining Room approximately 38'x 38' with two rows of iron
columns, a Kitchen approximately 14'x 1T, a Storeroom approximately 6'x 16', a Hall
approximately 12' square, a Sink Room approximately 6'x 6', a Lavatory approximately
6'x 6', a Boiler Room approximately 16'x 18', and a Coal Room approximately 18'x 22'.
The Basement has had rooms added over the years and there are now many more rooms
within the Basement. Additionally there are areas with unfinished crawlspaces. The
Basement is largely unused by Ambassadors for Christ, but could become a viable space
if renovated properly.
The Church was renovated and rededicated in 1940. During this renovation much of the
original Venetian frescoes were painted over and all gas lamps were replaced with
electric lights. Also during or subsequent to this'renovation a second floor was added to
the Sanctuary Annex and an addition was constructed at the southwest comer of the
church. The second floor is accessible via two staircases within the Sanctuary Annex.
The upstairs currently consists of four rooms and composite file floors. The Addition has
a couple of offices and two restrooms.
The Ambassadors for Christ Church as it stands today, is in uoor to critical condition
overall. There are areas which need immediate attention to prevent further degradation
of the building. These and other concerns are highlighted below.
The following is a brief summary of our findings which may require immediate
attention.
1. Repair slate roof as soon as possible.. The current conditions have deteriorated to
the point where water infiltration is affecting the structural integrity of the roof.
In addition many of the water infiltration issues at the interior can be directly
attributed to the roof.
1 " l 2. Thoroughly inspect and repair the wood structure.
3. Tuck point and repair mortar at the exterior of the building to eliminate bulk water
infiltration and damage at the interior of the building.
4. Repair and replace flashing at roof and materials connecting to roofing.
