The existing shape and materials of the roof shall be retained. All architectural features which give the roof its essential character <br />shall be retained, including dormer windows, cupolas, cornices, brackets, chimneys, cresting and weather vanes. <br />Recommended <br />Whenever possible, the original shape and materials of the roof shall be restored. Particular effort should be made to retain <br />materials such as slate, tile, and other unique materials not commonly found in new construction. Roof covering which is <br />deteriorated beyond repair should be replaced with new material that matches as closely as possible the original in composition, <br />size, shape, color and texture. Gutters and downspouts are often a necessary adjunct in order to prevent deterioration of the <br />structure; they should be maintained whenever possible or replaced with a style comparable and suitable to the architectural <br />period. <br />Prohibited <br />Nothing shall be done to change the essential character of the roof as viewed from the thoroughfare by adding architectural <br />features or large unsightly fixtures, or by using materials inappropriate to the style of the house. Wayne Street <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: Tudor Revival/ 1928/Whitcomb&Feller <br />Property Owner: Kimberly and Matthew Bloom <br />Landmark or District Designation: East Wayne Street <br />Rating: Notable <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: This two storey brick Tudor Revival home has the original asbestos tile on the steep <br />gable roof and steel casement windows with six lights and stationary transoms. The windows have brick header course sills and <br />brick soldier course lintels. There is a round arch entry in the front gable with a brick corbelled door surround. There is a <br />diamond brick pattern above the entry door. A gabled wood canopy with brackets is above the side door and the chimney on the <br />west side of the house is brick with a stone cap. There is a one storey enclosed rear porch <br />ALTERATIONS: The enclosed back porch was a noted later addition to the house in the 1986 survey card was demolished and <br />replaced with a 2 storey addition with COA #2011 -0502C. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Replace existing windows with new windows. Two front windows, all east side windows, except <br />attic. Anderson 400 series casement, consistent with new windows in 2011 remodel. . <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowners wish to replace the deteriorating casement windows on the front <br />and east side of their home. They contacted the Schobergs for repairs but the Schobergs declined the work since their expertise is <br />wood windows. They contacted Mark Carney from HPC's Contractor List because he repairs and restores both wood and metal <br />windows. His opinion is that they cannot be repaired. Please see his letter to Mrs. Bloom. The windows will match the ones <br />approved for the addition to the house in 2011. The front windows will have external grids to more accurately reflect the shadow <br />lines of the original casements. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: East Wayne Street Local Historic District <br />C. WINDOWS AND DOORS <br />Window and door frames are of wood or steel (some casements) or in the case of brick structures, stone sills and brick lintels <br />Where metal or vinyl siding has been applied, window trim has been covered. Storm windows are of wood or aluminum. <br />Required <br />Original windows and doors shall be retained including sashes, lintels, sills, shutters, decorative glass, pediments, hoods and <br />hardware. When deteriorated beyond repair, they shall be replaced with units and trim resembling the original. <br />Recommended <br />Wood frame storm windows and doors painted to match the original should be used but should not damage existing frames. If <br />new sashes or doors are installed, the existing or original materials, design, and hardware should be used. When metal storm <br />doors are used, they should be painted, anodized or coated to match the existing. When awnings are used they should be of <br />canvas material. <br />Prohibited <br />2 <br />
