Director's Report <br />September 2013 <br />20 August Prepared approved COAs and mailed to homeowners. Reviewed Report created <br />for HPC by Scott Scuff from the tax system. He will make some adjustments to sort by address. <br />Reviewed the Demolition List sent by Code for locations in districts or landmarks. Most of the <br />ones identified are in St. Casimir's National Register District. <br />21 August Received an inquiry from Javier Aguilar, Senior Project Manager with Great Lakes <br />Capital Development. He is interested in being appointed to the HPC. He was on the Richmond, <br />Indiana HPC. <br />22 August Attended Joseph Mathews funeral at Temple Beth -El. Spoke with Steve Anella <br />former partner ofJoe Mathews of Mathews Prurucker and Anella. Joe was the architect on about <br />1200 structures in South Bend and worked on such buildings as the County -City, Century Center, <br />the Kurt and Tessya Simon addition to Temple Beth -El. Joe also worked with Maurer and Maurer <br />the successor firm to Freyermuth and Maurer. Prior to the service, I spoke with Theodore Foti, . <br />retired Vice President of Memorial Hospital. He liked HPCs post card series and encouraged me <br />to make sure the Hospital's gift shop had some. Maria Kaczmarek of Dismas House at 521 S. St. <br />Joseph Street in Taylor's Field will be faxing a COA application for an in-kind roof replacement. <br />Assured her that, in spite of what she was being told by CID, the project could be staff approved <br />and would take about 10 minutes. Scott Senff is going to print off a copy of our report on his high <br />speed printer so that die Office can verify the input. <br />23 August Staff joined Margaret Rupel Yoder of Huntingdon, PA for a tour of the Walkerton <br />North Liberty area and the Rupel family history. Rupels were married into various local Arsberg, <br />Germany "pioneer" families like the Walz; and also Ullery, Anderson and Bunch families—local <br />prominent farming families south and north of South Bend. Gave Local Historic Districts of South <br />Bend, Indiana bus tour between 4-6pm. <br />26 August Send Javier Aguilar's request for appointment to the HPC to the County <br />-- - --- — -Commissioners-along with cover letter. Routine Office work and 106 Reviews. On site visit to Paul <br />Hayden's renovation on w. Colfax. Followed up on a Building permit issued without COA for -- - - - <br />soffit and other in kind work; building department clerk did not think it needed HPC approval <br />even though the house number listed it as historic property. <br />27 August Signed off on 15 106 Reviews for demolition. Review additional 15 sent into <br />Office. Gave Katrina of Code two that were occupied that wee scheduled for a special review. HPC <br />Staff not aware of the special review; also points up the difficulties in have properties on the tax sale <br />listing also scheduled for demolition. Buyers cannot renovate properties because of demolition <br />orders because building permits can't be issued. Followed up with Kathryn Roos on Open Data <br />South Bend which sated that HPC received $50,000.00 from the City in 2012 (!) Turned out to <br />be a paper work overlap issue from 2011. <br />28 August Routine Office work. Spoke with Jeff Dierbeck on proposed work at 840 Park <br />Avenue. Spoke with a representative from St. Hedgewigs Parish about repair to church step. <br />Church is not listed, encouraged in-kind, professional work on this significant structure. Followed <br />up on message from Betsy Harriman concerning Walker Field Shelter House in Rum Village that <br />is on die National Register. Advised her of its status and the necessity for careful, professional work. <br />John Oxian's landmark at 742 Sancome was the subject of a lenghy conversation with a neighbor <br />who is concerned about the distressed state of the property -notably crumbling concrete steps and <br />
