Director's Report
March 2013
25 February HPC Meeting and Strategic Planning meeting afterward. Learned from
Catherine Toppel that 1631 LWW , one of HPC's LL, was scheduled for demolition
hearing on 28 February; she also alerted the Office of an VOP letter from John Oxian
criticizing HPC and Code about this. Researched the problem and discovered that HPC
was never notified and that there are omissions on the City's GIS of some designations.
26 February General Office work. Work on new tour plan. Contacted SB Tribune
about omissions of HPC in the Restore Michiana article. Indiana Landmarks just sent out
a link from their publication and only mentioned themselves. HPC Staff and Interns put
the entire series together, wrote the copy and met with Paul Hayden to inform him of the
workshop series specifics. Read the Vacant and Abandoned Housing Report.
27 February RME COA for in-kind replacement of Driveway at 528 River. New
Director of Code, Shubhada Kambli, introduced at the Vacant and Abandoned Housing
Meeting at Washington High School. Elicia arranged a meeting on Friday with Chris
Chockley for a discussion of 745 Leland that he wants to invest in.
28 February Meeting with Rob DeCleene and Sue Solmos about the proposed tour.
Legends of Notre Dame is the working title at the moment. They were both very excited
and supportive of the concept of a tour that would show where coaches lived and the
houses and buildings of "Notre Dame Brick". Chris Fielding, Assistant Executive Director
of Community Investment met with me and the Staff and the Interns. Attempted to bring
him up to speed on the scope of the Commission and the focus of the Office. He is all on
board with deconstruction, salvage and preservation trades for the reconstruction and
rehabbing of vacant homes. Turned in fees for February. 5:00 meeting with the Events
Committee at the Conservatories for a Golden Anniversary celebration for the Ella Morris
Conservatory on 27 April.
1 March Meeting with Chris Chockley in Office about the house on Leland. He is
also a newly appointed member of the Park's IF, Very interested in up grading
the park system and looking at supporting a bond issue for the needed work. Expressed an
interest in Leeper Park and possible restoration of the rose garden with more species of
roses. Gave him the info on the Garden of Fragrance plans and the new lift station. Met
with Jerry Frye the new owner of 319 William, a local landmark. He researched the files
and I gave him information on Abatron and Speed Heaters to paint removal. Karen Hann
arrived at 4:00 for research and guidance on the LaSalle Hotel that she and a group of
investors want to rehab into a multi use site with apartments, condos and bike store.
2 March ,John Oxian's opinion piece was published. Highly critical of Code and
HPC. E-mailed Commissioners.
4 March Worked with Brian Haygood to get the two local Landmarks off of the
demo list. Sent him updated copies of the City and County landmarks for Code's records.
